The Wood Acres Parent-Teacher Association
The Wood Acres PTA is a volunteer, parent-run organization that supports the needs of our school families, staff and students. It takes hundreds of parent volunteers to plan and oversee the wide range of activities and events throughout the school year in our large and active community.
The PTA is funded through membership fees and the generous donations to the annual Wood Acres Pride Fund campaign. The Pride Fund not only supports PTA-sponsored events and activities at school, but also supports both academic and facilities expenses that are not covered by the MCPS budget. Additional funds are raised through smaller programs like our Grocery Programs, Box Tops for Education, the Barnes & Noble Book Fair, and Sally Foster. As a result of these fundraising efforts, we are able to keep fees for our activities, events and programs low and accessible to all our families.
What We Do…
We are a Resource for Parents and Families
We serve as an information resource for new and current families. We provide up-to-date information through the PTA website, our Membership Directory, the PTA’s weekly Wednesday Packet, our email listServ (known as “WoodNet”), and a weekly compilation of Community Announcements. In addition, the PTA website provides valuable quick links to WAES and MCPS classroom and curricular information.
We coordinate and support the school’s incoming Kindergarten parent coffees and student orientations. The PTA welcomes new families through our Wildcat Welcome Committee, which hosts back-to-school coffees and provides informational packets. We also work with Wood Acres staff and administrators to provide our parents with the most current MCPS curriculum and testing information as well as support our ESOL and Special Education families and students.
We Support Wood Acres Every School Day
We provide ongoing volunteer and financial support to academic and co-curricular components of the school day. We support the daily work of our Computer Lab Technology Specialist, Lynn Gregory. The PTA organizes and provides parent volunteers on a regular basis to assist in the Media Center, the Computer Lab, Lunch-Recess periods, and our Planetarium.
In addition, the PTA Green Team, with the help of staff and students, manages our ongoing classroom and cafeteria recycling programs. Our Room Parents also provide invaluable assistance to teachers throughout the year with class information lists, parties, guest readers, teacher appreciation, and in-class volunteers.
We Support Special School Programs
The PTA helps to fund and sponsor a limited number of unique academic enrichment classes, activities and events for Wood Acres students. These activities and events are coordinated by parent volunteers and include cultural assemblies; academic programs such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics); Wood Acres traditions such as the 4th Grade play Wizard of Oz; the Chess Team; the Visiting Artists’ program; and the 4th and 5th Grade Class Anthology.
*The Wood Acres PTA does not sponsor after school and before school programs run by outside organizations. For more information on these types of offerings, please consult our weekly Woodnet Community Announcements circulated via Woodnet.
We Sponsor Activities and Events for our Families
The Wood Acres PTA sponsors activities and events for families throughout the school year. These events are run by parents and are offered at a nominal cost. These activities and events include Bingo Night, Sock Hop, Ice Skating Night, International Night, Space Night, the Art Festival, and Bethesda Big Train Night. In addition, the PTA sponsors the Annual Wood Acres JogFest – a 5K Run open to the entire community.
We Engage in Community Outreach
Wood Acres PTA parent and student volunteers commit hundreds of hours each year to service projects in our community. These service projects include a Halloween Candy drive to benefit the United State Military overseas, a Thanksgiving Food drive, and monthly food collections for Martha’s Table. We also support our MCPS sister schools, New Hampshire Estates and Oak View Elementary, with an annual book drive, a warm clothing drive, donations from our Ledo’s pizza nights, and visits from our portable Planetarium.
We Provide Support for Teachers, Staff and our School Building
We are fortunate to have a dedicated staff of teachers and administrators and we work to support their efforts and keep our school beautiful. Each year, PTA volunteers organize a back-to-school breakfast for teachers and staff, a holiday cookie party, and recognition during National Teacher Appreciation Week. The PTA supports teacher attendance at conferences, teaching-team enhancements through our grant program, and other activities.
The PTA also helps maintain our school grounds, including the planting beds and shrubs, the Outdoor Classroom, butterfly garden, and our school sign. Our parent volunteers conduct seasonal cleanups and help support regular maintenance of these special areas as well as the overall landscaped areas.
We Welcome All Families to Join and Volunteer
We do A LOT to support our school. This support is made possible each year with the generous time and financial contributions of our Wood Acres parents and families. The Wood Acres PTA welcomes and is thankful for the dedicated parents, children and staff who work hard to make our community so wonderful for our families.
